A first-timer's guide to THC seltzers and hemp drinks

Hemp THC drinks look like any other seltzer, soda or shot, but each one carries a measured amount of THC. This guide covers how to read the label, how long drinks take, and how to pick a first can.

What is on the shelf

Most of our drinks section is canned seltzer and soda from brands such as Howdy, Indigo, 3CHI, Willie’s Remedy, Trail Magic, Oliphant, Cornbread and Find Wunder. There are also small shots and bottled non-alcoholic spirits from Kickin’ It Higher, Find Wunder and 8th Wonder. Liquid Death and Sprecher’s sodas contain no THC.

Milligrams per can, per serving and per bottle

Start with the number on the front of the can. Most of our seltzers are 5mg or 10mg per can, and some are 2.5mg. A few stronger cans are labeled for experienced users only. Tennessee caps a hemp drink at 15mg per serving and two servings per container.

Then check the serving size, because a can is not always one serving: Trail Magic’s 10mg seltzers list two 5mg servings per can. Bottled spirits need the closest look. A bottle labeled 75mg or 100mg may be giving the total for the whole bottle rather than one pour, so read the panel for milligrams per serving and count the servings you pour.

Some drinks also add CBD, CBG or caffeine; Trail Magic’s Half & Half lists 28mg of caffeine per can. Those amounts are on the label too.

How long drinks take

Drinks are typically felt sooner than gummies, often within about 15 to 30 minutes, and commonly for a couple of hours or more, longer at higher amounts. Food, tolerance and individual response all vary.

Start low and go slow

Reading the certificate of analysis

Tennessee requires hemp-derived THC products to carry a QR code linking to a certificate of analysis (COA) from a testing lab. Scan it with your phone camera and check that:

If a code does not scan or the numbers do not match, ask us before you buy.

Tennessee rules in brief

You must be 21 or older with a valid photo ID to buy hemp-derived THC products, and they are sold in person only at a TABC-licensed retailer. They cannot be delivered or shipped, so browse here and buy in store. The details are on our Tennessee hemp law page.
